FOUR STRINGS QUARTET: PRELUDE

PRELUDE is part of the opera ONCE UPON A PARTICULAR OCCASION.

Een vraag die ik me bij het maken van dit werk stelde was: Hoe zouden verschillende stemmen (individuen) zich tot elkaar kunnen verhouden, met elkaar kunnen interfereren, zonder verlies van eigenheid? Het werk is in die zin een belangrijk onderdeel van mijn onderzoek naar nieuwe vormen van relationaliteit. 

De film is vier keer belicht, waardoor de vier parallelle handelingen, het ‘bespelen’ van de instrumenten, in dezelfde fysieke ruimte plaatsvinden. Het split screen-effect is dus geen videobewerking achteraf, maar vond ‘echt’ plaats - wat je op sommige momenten van de film ook goed kunt zien, als de spelers elkaar af en toe een beetje overlappen, in elkaars kader treden.

FOUR STRINGS QUARTET is a project in which a hand-made string quartet plays the leading role. The quartet is made out of four blocks of solid wood, all from the same tree. The sizes correspond to the sound bodies (klankkasten) of a traditional string quartet - a cello, a viola and two violins. The four resonating bodies are carved from tulip wood, and each instrument is carrying one string, makes its own autonomous sound. The instruments are not interactive, they are active; fine-tuned in such a way that (with the right frequency generating the vibration of the string) they start to present themselves, making their own specific sound heard.

The first step of modeling, carving the wood is recorded on 16mm film: PRELUDE. In fact that is the first time that the instruments are being played.
