Novaja Gazeta is een van de weinige dissidente media in Poetins Rusland. Die houding is niet vrijblijvend en heeft een prijs. Sinds 2001 zijn vier journalisten van de krant vermoord, de bekendste was Anna Politkovskaja.
Op 25 juli vorig jaar, acht dagen na de crash van MH17 drukte de krant op haar voorpagina bladvullend een foto van de rouwstoet onderweg van Eindhoven naar Hilversum. Over de foto stond in het Nederlands de tekst “Vergeef ons, Nederland”, met eronder in het klein een Russische vertaling.
Volgens Novaja Gazeta kan er geen twijfel bestaan over de rol van Poetin in de vliegtuigcrash: 'De schuld voor de ramp ligt volledig bij hen die de lucifers in de handen drukten van de patiënten uit Lugansk en Donetsk.' Haar stellingname is de krant niet in dank afgenomen. Het schilderij wil de schuldvraag boven tafel houden en de krant een podium bieden.

Novaya Gazeta is one of the few dissident media in Putin's Russia. That attitude is not without risk and has a price. Since 2001, four journalists of the newspaper have been killed, the most famous was Anna Politkovskaya.

On July 25 last year, eight days after the crash of MH17 the newspaper published on its front full-page a picture of the funeral procession on the way from Eindhoven to Hilversum. Across the photograph was a Dutch text "Forgive us, Netherlands", and a Russian translation.

According to Novaya Gazeta, there can be no doubt about the role of Putin in the plane crash: "The blame for the disaster lies entirely with those who pushed the matches into the hands of the patients from Lugansk and Donetsk." The newspaper’s position was not appreciated. The painting tries to keep the question of guilt on the table and wants to offer a stage to the newspaper.
